Founded by experienced ecologists with a passion for practical, results-driven environmental solutions, The BNG Guy has become a trusted name for developers, planners, and landowners across the UK seeking expert ecological support that goes beyond box-ticking.
We specialise in end-to-end ecological delivery — from Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA) and BNG Metric calculations, through to Habitat Management and Monitoring Plans (HMMPs), protected species surveys, and even the purchase of BNG units through our national partnership network.
Our mission is to ensure that every client achieves measurable biodiversity gains while meeting planning policy and legislative requirements under the Environment Act 2021.
Unlike traditional consultancies, The BNG Guy bridges the gap between ecology and development. We understand the pressures of planning timelines, budgets, and stakeholder expectations — and our role is to make BNG compliance efficient, transparent, and value-adding.
Whether you’re managing a small housing scheme, a large-scale infrastructure project, or looking to sell BNG units from your land, we’ll guide you through every stage with clarity, integrity, and technical excellence.
At The BNG Guy, we don’t just measure biodiversity — we build it back better.

Biodiversity Net Gain
Protected Species
Protected Species Surveys are usually required when impacts to one or more legally protected species is considered likely and presence or likely absence needs to be determined.
Our fully licenced and qualified ecologists undertake all protected species surveys and EPSL licencing.
Ecological Appraisals
Assessing a site’s biodiversity value and is usually carried out as early as possible in the planning process.
The purpose of a PEA is to: Identify any potential for; ecological constraints, the need for further ecology surveys, any mitigation measures, as well as gaining a baseline for BNG.

The 4 steps to BNG freedom
Understanding your site
Every great BNG plan starts with understanding your site. Our experienced ecologists carry out a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA) to identify existing habitats, species, and any ecological constraints. We’ll establish a baseline biodiversity value for your site in line with the Statutory BNG Metric. This ensures your development starts with a solid foundation built on accurate, defensible data.
Analyse & Calculate
Once we know what’s on-site, we’ll analyse and calculate your biodiversity units using the official BNG Metric tool. This step highlights whether your project meets the mandatory 10% uplift or if there’s a shortfall. We’ll clearly explain what this means for your planning application, explore options for on-site habitat creation or enhancement, and identify where off-site units might be needed to achieve compliance.
Plan & Monitor
With the numbers clear, we move to the action plan. We’ll develop a tailored Net Gain Plan & Habitat Management and Monitoring Plan (HMMP) that sets out how biodiversity will be delivered and maintained for the required minimum 30-year period. This document forms a key part of your planning submission, giving the local authority confidence that your scheme meets all BNG requirements. We’ll also guide you through any legal agreements such as Section 106 obligations or conservation covenants.
Deliver
Finally, we help you turn your plan into reality. Whether you’re enhancing on-site habitats, purchasing BNG offset units through our trusted partners, or managing long-term monitoring, we make sure your commitments are delivered efficiently and transparently. With The BNG Guy by your side, you can focus on your project — knowing your BNG obligations are fully met and documented.
From first survey to final sign-off, The BNG Guy takes the complexity out of BNG compliance. We handle the science, the paperwork, and the strategy — you get planning approval with confidence.
